All Postings must comply with the Federal Fair Housing Act. This law makes it illegal to state, when posting a notice for housing (whether sale, rental or roommates), a discriminatory preference based on any of the following categories:

  • Race or color
  • National origin
  • Religion
  • Sex (although when sharing a bathroom, kitchen or other common area, you MAY list a preference based on sex only)
  • Familial status
  • Handicap/Disability

Federal laws regarding roommates and shared housing have two components, advertising and decision making. While discrimination in advertising is prohibited, homeowners MAY discriminate in the selection process of choosing a person who will share their housing.
