How is AbideWithMe.us different from other housing or caregiver sites?

Other housing and roommate sites fill an important need in allowing people with equal needs to share a house or apartment and split the bills.  AbideWithMe is geared more toward service to each other, with one “rich in house” sharing with one “rich in strength and health”.

There are also many caregiver sites available.  These are, for the most part, agencies which screen, train (or verify training), and hire caregivers.  The agency, as the employer, pays the caregiver a portion of the amount you pay them for the service.  We’d rather see your money go directly into the pocket of the one providing you the service.  Or, in your particular situation, perhaps there will be no money changing hands, but an even exchange of services.  In addition, many people do not need trained caregivers, so why pay for that if you just need a compassionate and reasonably intelligent person to help with personal care?  The terms and conditions of the agreement are between the homeowner and the caregiver; our only function is to provide the means to find each other. Again, each situation may be different.  It is your responsibility to agree to the duties of each party and what financial remuneration (if any) will be paid.

I don’t see anything to fit my needs.

This is a new service, just starting out.  We expect to grow as people benefit from our service.  First, be sure to post your need (whether for housing or assistance) so that others can find you.  And if you don’t see just what you need, please check back frequently to see what new posts are up.  It’s free to check as often as you like!

How do I locate assistance?

First, click on your state and county.  Then you can search by Seeking Assistance or Seeking Housing. Click here to see Sample Listings.

How do I finalize an agreement with the other party?

Any agreement is solely between the two parties. At the discretion of the parties, an agreement regarding assistance provided, housing details, etc. may be verbal only, or written.

Is it safe to “meet” someone online?

While we make no claims regarding the character of any individual, there are steps you can take to protect yourself or your loved one.  Be cautious, as you would when meeting any new person.  Click here for safety tips.
